Just recently, Dr Igor Jakomin, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport as well as Roberto Castelli, the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport of the Italian Republic, gathered in Ljubljana to talk about the Trieste-Divača railway.

The Trieste-Divača railway was approved by Italy together with Slovenia in 2008 together with the Koper-Divača railway. This railway is the second line railway which is considered a part of pan-European corridor V, consequent to the Priority Project VI. This said route for the Trieste-Divača railway was established through a verdict adopted by the Intergovernmental Commission. The European Commission after the decision made for this route stated that they will co – finance signed on December 5, 2008 for the preparation of the studies as well as the project documentation. However last December, Italy made a new proposal for the final route of the said railway wherein Slovenia didn’t have the same opinion. D. Jakomin stressed that they didn’t accept the Italian proposal for it would lead to a change in the spatial plans of Slovenia which requires about three years preparation under the Slovenian legislation. In this case, the construction of the railway would be prolonged since it is expected to be launched within the second half of this year. This is the reason behind why the two countries are currently working on searching a new route wherein both sides will agree upon.

On the other hand, Mr. Castelli expressed his sympathy for Slovenia’s objection for their proposal. Their meeting was closed with the agreement that both involved countries will look for a new route that would be agreeable to both sides. A meeting after two weeks is expected to discuss about the developments of this project.
