Burger King, a very popular US fast food chain is opening its very first outlet in Slovenia soon. According to reports, AmRest, a Polish firm has signed a preliminary agreement with Burger King Europe for its plan to open outlets in Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The biggest competitor of Burger King will be McDonald’s, a popular international fast food chain too that has currently 15 outlets over Slovenia. Although it currently has a lot of branches which opened first in 1993, McDonalds was actually not the very first fast food chain in Slovenia. It was Dairy Queen that opened first during the 1990s.
AmRest actually runs a lot of franchises of international brands like Pizza Hut, Starbucks and KFC in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia and Russia.

Maja Keuc, Slovenia’s representative for this coming Eurovision Song Contest to take place at Düsseldorf will be singing her winning song “Vanilija” in Germany in English. Last Sunday, wherein the Slovenian National Final, EMA took place, Maja gave an interview and at the same time sang a short part of the song she will be singing in English during the Eurovision Song Contest.

Last February 27, 2011m the Eurovision Song Contest was held wherein Maja Keuc won for her song Vanilija (Vanilla). She defeated other 9 participants who joined the contest wherein two contestants were chose by the following judges: Severina, Darija Svajger and Mojca Mavec before proceeding to the final round.
Maja Keuc won over April, a fellow super finalist who did the Lady Gaga-esque song Ladadidej. She got 28.908 votes while April got 11.993 votes. Maja actually got 42.5% who is followed by Naber with 18.5% and April 12.5%.

Ascent Resources soared high in London trading right after they have found out a natural gas at Petisovci field located in Slovenia. They rose up to 3.3% from 7.88% which earlier has advanced to 26% which is considered their largest gain since 13th of October. EnQuest Plc sold of its 49% stake in the Petisovci Project in Slovenia to Ascent Resources last December 2010. EnQuest got 22.5% equity stake in Ascent which is in trade for the interest.

Termoelektrarna Sostanj recently received their very first tranche of 550 million-euro or $750 million loan coming from the European Investment Bank. The purpose of the loan is to enhance the thermal power plant owned by Slovenia. This power plant is located in Sostanj, northern part of Slovenia. The 110 million-euro tranche was given after the power plant was able to get an environmental permit which was the agreement of the government and the bank. The upgrade cost for the Sostanj plant is approximately 1.2 billion euros and is considered the largest energy investment of Slovenia since they got their independence 20 years ago. For the equipment, Alstom SA of France will be the ones to provide.

Tina Maze, a Slovenian athlete is the first Slovenian to win an Alpine skiing world championship during the women’s giant slalom held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. She won the gold model as she defeated Federica Brignone from Italy by nine-hundredths of a second finishing at 2 minutes and 20.54 seconds.

Slovenia beat Iran Slovenia in the U16 Türk Telecom International Tournament basketball game. Iran lost to Slovenia with a score of 71-60 in Group B last Saturday. The Iran basketball team will be playing with Bulgaria who has recently defeated China during the second match. The U16 Türk Telecom International Tournament brought 12 basketball teams in total and the said event takes place in Gaziantep and will last up to February 12.

Just recently, the Slovenian parliament has adopted the declaration on ethic groups that came from Yugoslavia who are presently residing in Slovenia. The said declaration was passed just last Tuesday does not alter the legal status of the communities or new obligations for the government. However, it presents the parliament’s general stance on these communities. It states that Albanian, Bosniak, Montenegrin, Croat, Macedonian and Serb communities within Slovenia still have the right to organize based on ethnicity and at the same time permitted to improve their language and culture to help in the multiculturalism of Slovenia.

Adria Airways, Slovenia’s national carrier will begin to have seasonal summer flights from Ljubljana to Split starting May 21 of this year. Flights will take place once a week which is every Saturday using the Bombardier CRJ900 jet. Furthermore, Adria Airways got full rights to operate charter flights from Split to Kristiansand in Norway. Such service will help in continuing the flights between Ljubljana and Split that is once per week.
